The Gateway of India

Gateway of India, one of the major landmarks in Mumbai,  stands facing the waterfront in South Mumbai.

The construction of the Gateway of India was finished in 1924, built to honor the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary.  But after the British rule ended in 1947, this same gateway became a kind of an epitaph as the last of the British ships departed India towards England, through this archway.

This structure is made of yellow basalt stone and reinforced concrete.  I have seen it countless times on television and photographs.  It’s as grand as it appears on TV, but the place is too crowded.  A lot of youngsters have made this place a dating spot.  Security is tight, specially after the November 2008 bombing incident.

  1. Beautiful structure. I can understand why youngsters made it their dating spot. 🙂

It is indeed a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Besides this magnificent structure, you also get to see the Arabian Sea and Taj Hotel (pictures coming up!) 🙂

  2. Yup, I forgot to mention this place to you …. ddn’t you take any pics of the sea? 😀

Oh, I took a lot of pictures. How could I resist a beautiful view? 😀 They’ll be up in the next post, inshaAllah.
