An Unexpected Ramadan Gift
This isn’t a small masjid, yet it is quite obvious how it could no longer contain the growing number of people who come for the afternoon prayers. Just a few days ago, the huge chandeliers were dusted and rubbed until each crystal sparkled like diamond. The carpets were vacuumed and glass windows cleaned. Yesterday, an air-conditioned tent was put up where free food is served to anyone who came in during iftar to break their fast. All these in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan.
The Unexpected Gift
The other night, I woke up to find a huge paper bag sitting on the dining table. It was three in the morning, time for me to begin preparing for suhoor, or the meal consumed early in the morning before fasting.
Turns out our landlord stopped by around midnight and presented this as a gift for Ramadan. He personally visited each apartment and handed out a bag to everyone. Such a sweet gesture!
The box contains mixed baklava. Baklava—characteristic of the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire—is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo dough filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey.
These baklava from Alsultan Sweets have just the right amount of sweetness and tasted very fresh!
Ingredients mentioned on the box: Pistachio, cashew, flour, sugar, butter, and pine.
Interesting Fact:
Alsultan Sweets gained entry in the Guinness Book of Records for making the largest pack of candy in the world in 2010.
Ramadan Kareem! Oh my, what a lovely unexpected gift from your landlord. It’s stuff like that which makes me want to live in the UAE inshallah.

Humaira, this sweet gesture is uncommon. I have lived in my previous flat for 6 years straight and have never seen the landlord in our building.
What a fantastic landlord!

Khanum, I need to visit your blog lekin I want to read your posts sukoon se and I don’t have that luxury yet.
There’s a famous store in Michigan that has baklava trays like this that everyone always brings when they’re nearby. Probably not as good as UAE freshly made baklava though 🙂 That was an extremely sweet gesture by your landlord though! Ramadan aura is the best. Ramadan Mubarak to your family! 🙂

You’ll find similar mosques all over the UAE, what I love about the masjid here is that they are all clean and have women’s section so that even when shopping or driving across the emirates, one need not worry about missing a prayer.
Where is your building? I bet a lot of people will want to move there after reading your post =)
Landlord nowadays are in a bad light for the property increase. It is good to know somebody out there gives genuine care to good tenants.
Have a good weekend, Nadia!

You are right, Kero! This was such a sweet and completely unexpected gesture from the landlord in a time where they are easily considered as the villains for increasing the rents.
What a lovely gesture, Nadia. This landlord is a good man indeed. Never heard such a thing ever during my decades of stay here in the UAE; giving sweets to tenants and that too from Al Sultan :-). Alhamdolillah. Ramadhan Mubarak.
