Dhow: A Traditional Arab Ship
The history of Sharjah – then known as Sarcoa – goes back some 6000 years ago.Β At that time the population was really small, and in addition to some cultivation and hunting, they used to depend on trade (mainly pearls) andΒ building of maritime boats.
I took this picture at the Sharjah corniche during one beautiful sunset.
Beautiful picture mashaAllah!
Thanks, CC (can I call you that?). I love these traditional ships and boats.
Great shot Nadia! I love your photography. This reminds me of Noah’s ark.
Oooh, haan na! Now that you’ve mentioned it, it reminds me of Noah’s ark too π
Masha Allah ..Good one there Nadia…
Thanks, Frozeefa. When you guys visit us – inshaAllah – we’ll take you to the Corniche. I love that place!
Very pretty!
Thanks, ‘liya! π
great shot sis , i like so much & want to travel in it π
Thanks! I think you can’t travel in these old things anymore. They’re mainly used for dinner cruises now.
Yet another great shot.
And I never knew Sharjah is soooo (6000 years) old.
I also have no clue how come it is written in English as Sharjah but in Arabic they don’t write it with a “jeem”. It is with a “Qaaf”. But yet they don’t call it Sharqah…
Both are correct pronunciations: Sharjah: English pronunciation: /ΛΚΙrdΚΙ/; Arabic: Ψ§ΩΨ΄Ψ§Ψ±ΩΨ© ash-ShΔriqa
A traditional ship like this is to be presented to Singapore by Oman.I read a article about it.A very heartwarming gesture indeed! It’ll be in the museum when it arrives here,of course showcasing the good relations bet the 2 countries.
Yes! I read about it: The Jewel of Muscat. She’s expected to arrive in Singapore by July this year. I think it’s pretty cool. I heard no nails where used in building it!
Beautiful picture!
I always love the admixture of ancient and extremely modern elements, so I like very much the contrast of that old style wooden ship, with the contemporary buildings in the back.
…oh! And the golden light of the sunset is just so magic!
Thank you, Francesca! You’ll find lots of those here: mix of ancient/traditional and modern elements, and they’re really fascinating.

Thank you so much, dear! ((hugs))
Ohhh would just love to go on a dinner cruise in in, enjoying that beautiful sunset.
Btw you still didn’t do the Alhamdulillah tag!! Reminding you coz I would love to see your thoughts on that. π
I’m so glad you reminded me about the alhumdulillah tag. I really forgot to post about it, and I’m really sorry. But it’s up now π
Fabulous!
The ship looks better in the picture na? π
It looks like its made of ice-cream sticks! π
Ice-cream sticks?! The builders of this ship traveled far away into the dark and dangerous jungles of India, braving tigers and venomous cobras, in order to find the perfect wood – and you think this looks like it’s made of ice cream sticks?!
Yes, you are right actually π
Tigers and venomous cobras, hahaha, what an image! LoLz π
