You mean, that’s not the London Bridge?

london bridge

Oh, the heartache upon learning that my favorite bridge isn’t actually the London Bridge; it’s called the Tower Bridge, a very unimpressive name, if you should ask me. Could someone rename this structure to ‘London Bridge’, please?

Though one of the most famous bridges in the world, the sad truth is that the London Bridge simply does not exist anymore. The real London Bridge is gone, though it didn’t fall down. It has been replaced by something more modern (and it isn’t pretty). I don’t even have my own photograph of the modern London Bridge.

Regardless, this structure will always remain London Bridge in my heart. Did you know that it took over 50 designs and eight years to find a satisfactory design? No wonder this bridge now tops Great Britain’s list of architectural icons that make up London’s distinctive skyline.

My sister and her husband were our hosts in London. They have a lovely home with a garden at the back. This was a very short trip but one that is very special. I was so excited to see my sister that I had made absolutely no plans to see the city. My brother-in-law had to drag us out of the house to go sightseeing (and I’m so grateful to him for this otherwise I won’t have any photographic proof of having set foot in London).

The weather was just right. We walked, talked a lot, and simply enjoyed the amazing view of the bridge over River Thames. There was even a wedding shoot going on, the bride looking exquisite in her delicate white gown. The groom? Well, I did not notice. Who looks at the groom when the bride’s around?

We then stopped by for a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream and sat outdoors to take in the view while sipping our drink. It was absolutely lovely!

  1. Oh I wish I was in London to meet you! You know, come to think of it, I haven’t actually visited tower bridge! Not close up anyway. What kind of Londoner does that make me? Ah, something I have to rectify. Great photos!

    1. It makes you the kind of Londoner who needs to revisit the city and play tourist for a while 😀

Thank you, Londoneya. Who knows our paths might cross in London sometime in the future. You can never tell 🙂

    1. Yes, it’s a very impressive structure, Iram. The great time I had was more related to me being with my sister. I need to visit London again to see everything that the city has to offer.

  2. It. Is. London. Bridge. 😛
I googled for london bridge and i came to know that even google isnt sure about London Bridge.
Matlab one of the first things taught in academic life is a lie? London Bridge was always THIS bridge that falls down.
Khair, your pictures are as usual lovely, I wish to go there one day inshaAllah. Your blog is turning me into a traveller ab Nadia Baji 😛

    1. Yes, is it London bridge. Period. 😉

London bridge falling down the such a bara jhoot. Kitni buri baat hai na?

Being a traveler is a good thing. Go for your dreams!

  3. This was a very lovely short post. I am glad you enjoyed your time meeting your sister. Your photographs are making us fall in love with the whole idea of “being in London”. It’s perhaps about the time you captured in your snaps. Cold evening.

    1. Thank you so much, Khanum. I was surprised to find London rather narrow and small (everything looks bigger in photographs and TV) but it does have its own charm.

  4. I had the same sentiments when I went there. I asked my uncle to take a photo of mine with the ‘London Bridge’ as the backdrop. He then corrected me and said it is ‘Tower Bridge’. Oh well. I went there twice and I enjoyed chatting with him while people watching and as I stare at the different bridges within River Thames. I miss it. Is this the reason why you weren’t not to sold with your London trip? 😛

    1. Mica, I suppose my trip was too short to be able to truly enjoy the city. Another reason could be exhaustion: I had just returned from a 6-week US trip.

    1. Thank you, Sharmila! This was just a stopover on my way home from a business trip. I was only allowed three days off because some critical projects were underway.

  5. Ah, London! One of my favourite cities. I could go there every time and find something new to see and do.

Btw, how come I don’t get notified of your new posts? You don’t post on facebook or twitter?

  6. I have a whole list of all the things I need to see/do in London, each time as Mezba said, there’s something new to see!

    Very nice pictures at night!
